Key takeaways
- A PWA progressive web app is a website that works like an app. Customers install it from the browser in one or two taps.
- In India, a PWA usually costs ₹80,000 to ₹3 lakh, about one third of a normal app.
- It works on Android and iPhone. iPhones support PWA notifications, and iOS 26 opens home screen websites as apps.
- Choose a normal app if you need Bluetooth, NFC, background GPS on iPhone or an App Store listing.
- Google can find PWA pages in search, which helps more customers find your business.
Many shop owners tell us, "I want an app for my business." When we ask why, the answer is usually simple. They want customers to come back. They want an icon on the customer's phone. They want to send a message when an order is ready.
A PWA progressive web app can do all of this. For many Indian businesses, it costs about one third of a normal Play Store or App Store app. In this guide, we explain what a PWA is, how much it costs in 2026, how it works on iPhone and Android, and when you should build a normal app instead.
Quick answer: A PWA is a website that works like a mobile app. Customers install it from the browser in one or two taps. It has its own icon, opens full screen, loads fast and can work without internet. In India, a PWA usually costs ₹80,000 to ₹3 lakh.
What is a PWA progressive web app?#
A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that behaves like an app.
Here is how it works for your customer:
- They open your website on their phone.
- They tap "Install" (on Android) or "Add to Home Screen" (on iPhone).
- Your business icon now sits on their phone, next to WhatsApp and YouTube.
- When they tap the icon, your app opens full screen, without the browser bar.

Three small parts make a website into a PWA:
- Web app manifest: a small file with your app's name, icon and colours.
- Service worker: a small script that saves your pages on the phone. This makes the app load fast and work even when the internet is weak.
- HTTPS: a secure website address. Most good websites already have this.
There is no big download. There is no waiting for app store approval. When you change a price or add a product, every customer sees it the next time they open the app.
Benefits of a progressive web app for business#
1. Customers do not need to download anything#
Most phones in India are full of photos and WhatsApp videos. People do not want to download a 50 MB app just to order a cake once a month. But they will happily tap "Install" on a website they are already using.
2. It works on slow internet#
A PWA saves your pages on the phone after the first visit. So the next visit opens in about a second, even on weak 4G in a small town.
3. One app for every phone#
The same PWA works on Android phones, iPhones, tablets and computers. You pay for one build, not two.
4. Google can find it#
A normal app is hidden inside the app store. A PWA is a website, so Google can show your pages in search results. This is very important now that Google AI Mode shows answers before links.
5. It has worked for big Indian companies#
Flipkart is the best example. In 2015, Flipkart closed its mobile website and asked everyone to download the app. It did not work well. So Flipkart built Flipkart Lite, a PWA. Sales from mobile visitors went up by about 70%, and people stayed on the site about three times longer.
PWA vs native app: simple comparison#
A "native app" is a normal app that you download from the Play Store or App Store.

| Point | PWA | Native app |
|---|---|---|
| How customers get it | From the browser, 1–2 taps | Download from app store |
| Works on | Android, iPhone, computer | Separate build for each |
| Cost in India | ₹80,000 – ₹3 lakh | ₹3.5 lakh – ₹8 lakh+ |
| Time to build | 4–10 weeks | 12–20 weeks |
| Updates | Instant, for everyone | Needs store approval |
| Shows in Google search | Yes | No |
| Bluetooth, NFC on iPhone | No | Yes |
| GPS in background on iPhone | No | Yes |

Progressive web app on iPhone and Android in 2026#

On iPhone (iOS 26)#
iPhones are now better for PWAs than before.
- Since iOS 16.4, a PWA on the iPhone home screen can send push notifications and show a red badge number.
- With iOS 26, any website added to the home screen now opens as an app by default, not as a simple bookmark.
But there is one problem. iPhone does not show an "Install" button by itself. The customer must tap Share → Add to Home Screen. So your PWA should show a small message telling iPhone users how to do this.
On Android#
Android makes it very easy. Chrome shows an "Install app" button, and it takes one tap. You can also put your PWA on the Google Play Store using a method called Trusted Web Activity. So customers who search the Play Store can find you too.
Normal apps now need more yearly work#
From 31 August 2026, Google Play needs app updates to support Android 16 (API level 36). Apple also asks for apps to be built with its newest tools. This means a normal app needs developer work every year just to stay in the store. A PWA does not have this problem.
Progressive web app development cost in India#

Here are the usual prices in India in 2026:
| What you need | Usual cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Turn your current website into a PWA | ₹25,000 – ₹60,000 | 1–3 weeks |
| New PWA with catalogue or booking, login and notifications | ₹80,000 – ₹1,80,000 | 4–7 weeks |
| Ordering or online store PWA with payments and admin panel | ₹1,50,000 – ₹3,00,000 | 6–10 weeks |
| Same features as a normal app for both stores | ₹3,50,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 12–20 weeks |
Yearly costs are also lower. You do not pay the Apple developer fee. You do not need to rebuild every year for new phone versions. You only pay for hosting and normal maintenance, just like a website.

When a PWA is not the right choice#
We want to be honest with you. A PWA cannot do everything. Choose a normal app (or a Flutter or React Native app) if you need:
- Bluetooth or NFC – for example, connecting to a Bluetooth printer or weighing machine. iPhone does not allow this in a PWA.
- GPS running in the background on iPhone – for example, live tracking of a delivery rider all day.
- A listing on Apple's App Store – Apple usually rejects apps that are only a website.
- Heavy games or 3D graphics – normal apps are faster for this.

Many delivery businesses use both. Customers get a PWA, because they order only sometimes. Riders and staff get a normal app, because they use it all day and need GPS.
Is a PWA right for your business?#
A PWA is a good first choice if you run a:
- Shop or supermarket
- Restaurant or cloud kitchen
- Clinic or diagnostic lab
- Coaching centre or school
- Salon or gym
- Real estate office
- Local service business
It is the right fit if your customers mainly need to see products, book, order, pay and get updates.
It is an even better fit if:
- Most of your customers use Android phones (most Indian customers do).
- You already have a website, or you need one for Google anyway.
- You want to test your idea with ₹1–2 lakh before spending ₹6 lakh on a full app.
- You change prices, menus or stock often.
Add a WhatsApp chatbot for order updates, and your customers get almost everything they expect from an app.
Checklist: how to get a good PWA built#
Before you sign with any company, ask for these things in writing:
- ✅ The app installs properly on both Android and iPhone.
- ✅ iPhone users see a small "Add to Home Screen" guide.
- ✅ An offline page, so customers see something useful when the internet drops.
- ✅ Push notifications tested on both phones.
- ✅ A Google Lighthouse report showing speed and install scores.
- ✅ You own the code, domain and hosting, not the agency.
Final word#
For most small and medium businesses in India, a PWA progressive web app is the smart first step. It gives your customers an app-like experience, costs much less, and helps you show up on Google. If your business later needs special phone features, you can build a normal app with real customer data in hand.
Larwell Technologies builds PWAs, websites and mobile apps for businesses in Bokaro, Ranchi, Jharkhand and across India. Not sure if you need a PWA or a normal app? Tell us what your customers need to do on their phones. We will give you an honest answer and a clear price.
