Khojoo is a classified website development project for a local Indian marketplace. People can buy, sell, swap, give things away or bid in live auctions, and also find jobs, events and suppliers. It detects the user's city, shows prices in rupees and installs on phones like an app.

The challenge

Khojoo set out to be a "trusted platform for buying, selling and auctioning" for everyday people and small businesses in India. Its early listings come from cities like Bokaro and Dhanbad in Jharkhand, where big national classified sites often feel distant and crowded with listings from other states.

A classifieds platform is really several products in one. The brief included:

  1. Normal buy and sell listings across many categories: real estate, vehicles, electronics, jobs, education, health, travel, food and more.
  2. Other ways to trade. Not everything is a straight sale. Khojoo wanted swapping, free stuff (giving things away) and bidding through live auctions.
  3. Beyond products. Job seekers and employers, event organisers and business suppliers all needed a place too.
  4. Local first. A person in Bokaro wants to see listings near them, not in Mumbai. Location had to be automatic but easy to change.
  5. Simple posting. If posting an ad is hard, the marketplace stays empty. "Post Ad" had to be quick on a phone.
  6. Mobile everywhere. Most users would come from phones, many on slower connections.

The chicken-and-egg problem#

Every marketplace faces the same early problem: buyers only come if there are listings, and sellers only list if there are buyers. The way through is to make listing extremely easy and to give people more reasons to visit — deals, auctions, free items, jobs — so the site feels alive even while it is growing.

What classified website development really involves#

From the outside, a classifieds site looks like a list of ads. Behind it sit categories with their own fields (a car needs a year and fuel type, a flat needs a size and rent), location search, photo handling, spam control and user accounts. Getting these foundations right early saves a full rebuild later, when the listing count grows.

What we built

We built Khojoo as a multi-purpose local marketplace with one account for everything.

Many ways to trade#

Mode What it does
Buy / Sell Standard listings with price, photos and contact
Swapping Offer an item in exchange for another
Free Stuff Give away things you no longer need
Bidding Live auctions with a "Recently Added Live Auction" feed

More than products#

  • Jobs for job seekers and employers.
  • Events for local organisers.
  • Suppliers and business listings for B2B buyers.
  • Saved favourites so users can come back to listings later.

Location built in#

The site auto-detects the user's location and shows nearby listings first. Users can change the city at any time. Listings show prices in rupees and the seller's area, so buyers know straight away if an item is close.

Fast posting#

The "Post Ads" and "Sell" buttons are always visible. Posting asks only what a buyer needs to know: category, title, price, photos and location.

Keeping the home page alive#

The home page shows "Latest Offered Deal" and "Recently Added Live Auction" blocks. Even a first-time visitor sees fresh activity, which builds trust in a new marketplace.

Installable like an app#

Khojoo is a Progressive Web App. Users get an "Install App" prompt and can add it to their home screen. It opens like a native app, without Play Store downloads or app review delays.

Decisions that mattered#

  • One platform, many modes. Swapping, free items and auctions give people more reasons to visit than plain classifieds.
  • Location first. In smaller cities, "near me" is the whole value of a classified site.
  • PWA, not native apps. One codebase, instant updates, and lower cost for a growing startup.

Lessons for anyone building a marketplace#

Keep posting simple, show activity on the home page, and give people a reason to come back every day. A marketplace is judged by how alive it feels, so every design choice here pushed fresh listings and deals to the front.

Questions about this project

What is a classified website?
It is a site where people post ads to sell, buy or trade items and services, usually in their local area. Khojoo adds swapping, free items, live auctions, jobs and events on top of normal listings.
Can you build a website like OLX?
Yes. Khojoo has the core features people expect from OLX-style sites — categories, photos, location, posting ads — plus auctions and swapping. We build these on Laravel so the owner keeps full control of the code and data.
Do I need a mobile app for a marketplace?
Not always. Khojoo is a PWA, so users can install it from the browser and open it like an app. This avoids the cost and delay of separate Android and iOS apps while the marketplace grows.
