"Type one line about your business and get a website in two minutes." In 2026 that promise is real. Hostinger's Horizons AI builder is advertised in India at ₹249 a month, Wix starts at ₹199, and the site they produce looks better than many agency websites did five years ago.
So with Navratri on 11 October and Diwali on 8 November, a lot of shop owners are asking a fair question: why pay a developer at all?
The honest answer is that sometimes you shouldn't. This guide puts the AI website builder vs custom website decision in rupees, shows where each option wins, and lists the costs that only show up in year two.
What AI website builders genuinely do well#
AI builders are not a gimmick any more. For the right job they are the sensible choice:
- Speed. A presentable site in an afternoon, not three weeks.
- Writing help. They draft your "About us", service descriptions and headings, which is often the part owners get stuck on.
- Mobile-ready templates. Most layouts work well on a phone out of the box.
- Low starting cost. No large upfront payment, just a monthly or yearly plan.
If you are a tutor, a consultant, a salon, a freelancer or a new business that simply needs to exist online with a phone number, map and WhatsApp button, an AI builder is often enough. We tell clients that directly.

Two things to notice. Introductory prices renew higher, and Hostinger does not publish the Horizons renewal rate on its promotional pages, so ask before you pay. And on Wix, the moment you want to sell online, the price jumps from a few hundred rupees a month to over ₹2,000.
The four hidden costs of an AI-built website#
1. Limited SEO control#
Builders cover the basics: titles, descriptions, a sitemap. What they usually limit is the deeper work: clean page structure, custom schema, fine control over how pages load. For a business that wants to rank for competitive searches, or appear in Google's AI answers (see our Google AI Mode SEO guide), that ceiling matters.
2. Heavier, slower pages#
Builder templates carry scripts for every feature, whether you use it or not. On a customer's phone over patchy 4G in a tier-2 town, an extra two or three seconds of loading is where enquiries are lost.
3. Lock-in#
This is the one owners discover too late. On most builders you rent the website; you do not own it. Wix, for example, does not let you move your site to another host. You can take your domain and copy your text and images, but the design and structure stay behind. Leaving means rebuilding.
4. The functionality ceiling#
Builders handle simple things well and struggle with anything specific to how your business runs:
- An online store with product variants, stock that syncs with your shop counter, and GST-correct invoices
- Appointment booking across several staff members with different hours
- Customer logins, dealer portals or order history
- Anything that must talk to your billing software, CRM or WhatsApp automation
At that point you are no longer buying a website. You are buying a small piece of business software, and it needs a developer who will be around to maintain it.
The five-year cost comparison#

The pattern is the point. For a simple site, the builder and a small custom site cost roughly the same over five years. For an online store, a builder can cost as much or more than a custom build, and at the end you still own nothing you can take elsewhere.

The middle path most businesses should consider#
It is not all or nothing.
- Start on a builder, but own your domain. Register it yourself, not inside the builder account, so you can move later without losing your address.

- Build custom only where it earns money. A simple CMS site plus the one feature that matters, whether that is a store, booking or a WhatsApp enquiry flow, is often the best value.
Five questions to ask before you commit#
- Is the domain registered in my name, outside the builder or agency account?
- What is the renewal price after the introductory period, including tax?
- Can I export or move this site if I leave?
- Can it produce GST invoices and connect to my billing software?
- If I need a mobile app or customer logins in two years, what happens to this site?
If a builder passes all five for your situation, use it and save your money. If it fails two or more, you are likely to rebuild within a couple of years.
